GREGG AUGUST is the man of the hour on the bass. He’s played with Ray Barretto, Ornette Coleman, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo O’Farrill, James Moody, The Chico O’Farrill Big Band, The list goes on. As a classical bassist he frequently performs with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, The Mark Morris Dance Group, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and the American Composer’s Orchestra. He’s also a faculty member at the Bang on a Can Summer Music Institute at MassMoca in North Adams, Mass. We cracked a beautiful bottle of wine at his place in brooklyn, and he’s got a lot to offer here.

He’s also made 3 records of entirely original music. He plays regularly with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Bang on a Can, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and is the former Principal bass of La Orquesta Ciutat de Barcelona and Brooklyn Philharmonic. He’s on faculty at the University of Connecticut and NYU, as well as the Bang on a Can Summer Festival at MASSMoCA in North Adams , MA. As a bassist Gregg spans the jazz, Latin jazz, classical and avant-garde scenes. A sought-after composer and arranger, celebrated for his versatility, breadth and intelligence, Gregg has been an active member of the New York music scene for many years.
